Influences of Once

Everyone knows that Once, I had a dream, and this epic tale of Cain and friends is it. So my last post provided a very brief overview of my good characters and what they stand for, yet today, I’m going to share what exactly influenced me to write Once, and all of the elements that are laid within the text.

Shotball: Okay, so I am a huge fan of new games and fictional sports, so I came up with a game called shotball, which is frequently featured in the book. So how did shotball come into fruition? Basically, back in 2009-2010, I became sick and tired of NFL Commish Roger Goodell removing the violence and unpredictability from the sport, so I impulsively wrote up the rules for a new game, calling it warball. After realizing some band named an album warball, I changed the game to shotball. I initially didn’t want to include a sport in Once, but as the characters developed, a sport just worked. There are so many different elements to a story sports can bring, so shotball became an integral part of the text. And fear not, I plan on writing a future post dedicated to shotball and shotball only!

Harry Potter: I was, and still am, a HUGE Harry Potter fan. For one, I am into Pottemore.com. I was sorted into Ravenclaw and my Patronus is a Stallion. Harry Potter elements run amok in Once, but don’t worry, my work is original and it isn’t a retelling of the epic tale of a boy who had no idea he was a wizard. Yet, you will see a ton of Harry Potter influence in Once, potentially more than any other influence. But like I said, my work is original and is NOT a carbon copy.

The American Revolution: Uh, more of a modern day interpretation of the American Revolution. You will see a lot of influence from our Sons of Liberty such as George Washington, Sam Adams, and others. I also make some references to the Revolutionary War itself. If you like war tales, Once might pique your interest. If you like war tales with Harry Potter influence, you’ll probably love this book.

Avatar: The Last Airbender: I loved this show back when I was in the eighth grade. I want to say I was a junior in high school when the series ended. It was awesome, and unique, and I had to insert this into Once. For a time, I must admit that I did debate, but after putting it in, taking it out, putting it back in, and taking it back out, I finally put it back in. So ow and behold, The Last Airbender lives on in Once.

Lost: Probably my favorite TV Series ever. Lost tells the story of…..well…..no one really knows. See, a plane crashes on a weird island and the characters  are all, you know, you should probably just watch it on Netflix. Anyway, if you DO know the concept of Lost you are going to see a lot of it in Once. And I mean a lot of Lost elements. Just because you see it, doesn’t mean it’s in it’s true form.

Star Wars: Yes, there are some Star Wars elements in here as well. So, for those of you who love Star Wars, you are in luck, as there are several different Star Wars influences running around in Once. You’re going to like this series if you are a Star Wars fan.

The Magnificent Seven: Protectors of the town, as was in the Magnificent Seven. You have this influence virtually everywhere in Once. Not just that, if you like a large cast of main protagonists, as shown in The Magnificent Seven, you just might find solace in Once.

The Hero With A Thousand Faces: A simple book by a man named Joseph Campbell literally changed my life forever. In fact, it is said that George Lucas himself was influenced by the same exact book. Let me tell you something, and it’s mentioned above: if you like Star Wars, you are GOING TO LOVE ONCE!

Symphonic Power Metal Genre: There is that one genre of music that is our go-to. Mine is symphonic power metal. Bands like DragonForce and Nightwish are probably the two many think of and the lyrics in the mighty songs of these two bands have influenced me more than anything. I love these two bands as much as I love anything else that resides on this Earth and I have no idea what I would do had I not discovered them. But there are others as well. Two Steps From Hell produces music so inspiring to my chosen genre I cannot begin to comprehend how helpful it is to simply listen to their music and write. Big thanks to the style and lyrics of Xandria. Not did I inadvertently look over a song I liked on Pandora that was sung by Xandria, but you really opened up doors in my quest for discovering the downright beauty and power of symphonic power metal. Dark Moor, Delain, Within Temptation, your songs have influenced this work as well. Once wouldn’t be Once without the inspiration this kind of music provides. It is by far the greatest (and most underrated in America) genre of music ever.

Once is a war story with fantasy, romance, love, and loss. It is dark, very dark, yet simultaneously very uplifting. Once is more that just an epic tale, it shows that when people, good people, with a common goal, against all odds, band together, the impossible can and WILL become possible.
